When Ngozi returned with the carpenter, Dimma was no longer in the house.
She found the door unlocked.
“Ow, she is no longer here, seems she has left. But how did she managed to to get out? The door was properly opened.” She said and then looked at the carpenter man she brought to help open the door.
“ERM, the..the…..the…..door is open now, looks like someone opened it. I’m sorry that I brought you here for nothing. I have just wasted your time, I’m sorry”
“Hmm, not to worry, but next time, if you have any job that falls to my skills, please don’t hesitate to call me”
“Off course I will.” Ngozi assured.
And the carpenter left.
Ngozi was still wondering how Dimma left the house.
“Did Ugonna finally opened the door for her? Let me call her to know what happened?” She then began dialing Dimma’s number, but no response.
“Maybe she is already in the exam hall, and I shouldn’t be disturbing her” she said and began dialing Ugonna’s number.
“Hello Mama”
“Yes my son, I’m glad you finally listened to the voice of reason. When Dimma return from her exam, we will come together as a family and put an end to this fuse once and for all. Siblings shouldn’t be behaving like this with each other. And………”
“Mama” Ugonna interrupted
“Yes, my son, I am here”
“I told you that I will get to the root of this matter, but you think that I was joking. I’m the man of the house, and if Dimma won’t respect me as the man of the house, then it’s my duty to impose it on her”
“You are sounding so mean my son, this shouldn’t be the way to speak about your own sister, your own blood for that matter”
“Mama, your daughter is in the police station now, I got her arrested. I think that’s the only measure for her to vomit my money”
“What?” Ngozi couldn’t believe what she heard
“Yes mama, it’s my hard earned money we are talking about here, she can’t just go scot free for robbing me off my money”
“Oh my God! I am finished, my son has gone crazy. Ugonna, you did what? You got your sister arrested?”
“Mama, she is an armed robber and not my sister any more. I have taken her to the place station to rot in prison where she belongs.”
“Ugonna, get her released at once. I said, release her at once. What has gotten into you?”
“Mama, it’s too late for that now, too late. I have to hang up now.” He then ended the call.
“Chim o, I think it’s better you take me away from this horrible world now, I don’t want to live anymore. This is too much for me to bear.” She wept… And continued
“My daughter, Dimmam, how can she be suffering for something she knew nothing about. And her exam? The exam she has been preparing so hard for a very long time… Oh Lord, her heart will be so broken. And I can’t imagine her forgiving Ugonna anytime soon. That means, their hatred has been heightened. Brother and sister in a deep fury. Lord, what crime have I committed for you to visit my family with this mayhem?..” She continued crying…
Diogor was still jubilating over the recent development, but her mother wasn’t looking all cheerful.”
“Mother, why is your face like that?”
She hummed and said: “My daughter, though our plan went successful but we have successfully created more problems for ourselves”
“How? She won’t be writing the exam again, so I wonder how that will be a problem for us?”
“He shouldn’t have arrested Dimma. I never knew he will go to that extent. Now the police will have to investigate.”
“Yes, they should investigate naa, there is no big deal, they didn’t know I was the one. Is that why you are stressing yourself? Relax mother”
“Diogor, you are my daughter, you should sometimes make use of your brain, learn how to think deep. The police will investigate and Ebube will be arrested to give account of how Dimma has been threatening her. Who knows, she might confess, and you know what that means?”
“Hmm, but I don’t think she will confess”
“Diogor, you are speaking like this because you haven’t seen where those people of the law interrogate people. She won’t even know when she will say the truth.”
“Oh dear, now I’m worried.. This is going to be a problem and Ugonna shouldn’t find out about what we did.” They were still talking when Nneoma’s phone rang.
“Its Ebube” she said, picking the phone.
“Hello, hope you have heard?” Ebube asked
“Heard what? Are the police there to arrest you?” Nneoma feared
“No, but that’s my fear too. I never knew that Ugonna would go that far. We never thought he will have the mind to arrest his very own sister. And now, I’m scared, the police might arrest me for questioning. I don’t know….”
“Ebube, listen, I want you to stay put, let me think of something. Don’t run away from the restaurant, it will look suspicious”
“Hmm, what ever you are doing, please make it fast” Ebube requested
Dimma never stopped crying. She never stopped thinking about her exam, and the fact she missed it kept piercing her heart.
She wasn’t heartbroken that her own brother got her arrested for a crime she didn’t commit, but the fact she missed the exam she really worked hard to partake kept hurting her heart and she never stopped crying.
