Steps of love – episode 11 by Ngozi Lovelyn
As Ifunanya reached the entrance door, Victor called her.
“Yes” she answered, looking at him.
“Don’t say anything to her. I’m serious” Victor insisted
Ifunanya nodded, observing the seriousness on his face.
“I won’t” she promised, leaving.
Observing Ifunanya closely, she was hurt on how her lies made situations difficult for everybody. She never expected things to turn out so ugly.
She never stopped wondering why Victor insisted on not telling Amanda the whole truth.
“Amanda is my best friend, I shouldn’t have lied to her in the first place. And in order to rectify my mistakes, she needs to know the truth. And now, Victor is making me keep silent about it. I’m in a very tight corner now”
And Ifunanya’s phone rang.
“Where have you been? Why are you ignoring my calls? Something is happening with Victor as we speak. I don’t know if he is still alive” Amanda spoke on top of her voices.
And Ifunanya was lost of the words to reply her
“Hello… Ifunanya, where are you?” Amanda asked, sounding restless
“I’m at B-line junction” She quickly replied
“What are you doing there?” Amanda asked, wondering what she was doing there.
“Is it about Victor? You rushed there after I told you what was happening? Did you arrive there on time? I mean, did you see him? Do you know where they took him? Ifunanya, I think I made a terrible mistake and I don’t know if Victor is ever going to forgive me. I don’t even know what I was thinking. I don’t know what got into me. I need to see him.”
Amanda who was rushing words like a car that lost control, paused, realising how quiet Ifunanya was, which was not so typical of her.
“Hello, Ify, are you there?” she asked
“Amanda, is your heart that cold?” Ifunanya calmly asked in a sad tone.
Realising where the question was coming from, Amanda sadly asked, “Where is he now?”
“He could have died. He could have died, Amanda. I didn’t expect such wicked behaviour from you.” Ifunanya replied, without giving out the address.
“Say no more, please. Your words are adding more salts to my injury. You can’t imagine how I’m hurting right now. This is one thing I’m going to regret for the rest of my life. What’s the name of the hospital? I need to see him.”
Ifunanya ends the call, without saying anything.
“She ended the call? If Ifunanya is this angry, who knows how much bitterness Victor’s heart will be building up for me. I’m really terrified.” Amanda feared
And then, her phone beeped. She checked, it was a message from Ifunanya. She opened it and it read the hospital’s address.
Amanda started the engine and zoomed off.
Ifunanya tried finding the key, but it turned out unsuccessful. She asked everybody around, but no one seemed to have a clue about the car, nor the key. Ifunanya disappointedly headed back to the hospital.
Amanda was already standing at the entrance door, but still lost of the courage to face Victor.
She breathed fast, slowly stepping in her legs.
Victor, who noticed that someone was standing by the door felt a cool breeze brushing his skin. And he immediately knew that, it was Amanda. It was the same feelings he nurtured for years, searching for her.
“Behind that pretty spotless face hides a witch embedded in human form. You boldly denied me in the in the presence of all, so what are you doing here?” Victor asked.
Amanda had tears flowing freely, down her cheeks as her heart torn into pieces.
