After Ndubuisi left, Ogechi ran into her room, crying out her heart as her mother stood there, speechless.
She felt disappointed with Ogechi and wondered what made her stoop so low. She knew her as a child who never touched anything that doesn’t belong to her and wondered what made her got carried away with the goodies she saw in the city.
She felt really bad and humiliated. She then rushed inside to scold her badly.
“Bia Ogechi, why are you crying, so you didn’t think of loosing your marriage before allowing your longer throat to push you into disgracing me and your father? Now, what will the villagers say? Which means those market women were right? Ogechukwu, you didn’t think of me me, your mother before you resort to disgracing me before the entire village. You want to have me loose my face among my fellow women. If this news circulate round the village, Ogechi we are done. Ogechukwu why?” She asked in deep anger as her heart nurtured slight tears, but Ogechi wasn’t even aware she was there. She was in deep sorrow and going through a lot at the moment. She just lost her husband whom she had developed sincere love for and had also been manipulated forcefully into doing a very despicable act which she would never forget in her life.
And thinking deep about it, Ndubuisi will never forgive her because there was no way for the truth to come out.
Her mother, who gave birth to her and raised her never believed her, talk more of Ndubuisi who was still in the process of knowing her.
To her, her chances of getting Ndubuisi back was 0 percent. She then concluded that, there was no point of living. Ndubuisi finding out about her dark moment was the most humiliating thing she could endure in her life.
Her mother was still shouting at her in a wailing tone, but was angrier when she noticed that, Ogechi wasn’t even listening nor even looking at her direction. She was just there, lost as her eyes got fixed on a particular direction, pouring tears.
And this silence made her mother bitter as she descended on her with a serious beating, for her to explain why she did what she did.
But she was confused with one thing. She was beating Ogechi with all her strength, but Ogechi didn’t cry nor run out of the room. She was just there, receiving the beating as if she was a wood.
The mother got tired and left her there. She brought out her and started calling her husband to come home. She also told him what happened, which left the man in total shock and disorganised.
“If she had needed those things, why not ask her husband, instead of stealing them? Which means, those market women were right”
“Papa Ogechi, just come back home, let’s discuss on how to meet Ndubuisi and beg him to forgive and accept his wife back”
“Do you think he will still accept to have her back. I don’t see that man coming back for her”
“Let’s not conclude yet, there is no harm in trial”
‘Seriously, that girl has destroyed the reputation of our family. How do I face my inlaws? This is really shameful” Papa Ogechi said
Okwuchi was just sitting in front of her compound peeling melon when Ndubuisi drove into the compound.
She looked closer into the car, but didn’t see Ogechi. She then wondered why he was alone and what he was doing at home.
As Ndubuisi alighted from his car, Okwuchi observed his face and discovered he was looking extremely sad.
She then feared that something terrible had happened to her son. She held on to her heart and quietly walking to him.
“Mama, I have returned Ogechi to her family. I’m done with her”
“What?” Shocked Okwuchi asked, waiting for him to explain his reasons for sending Ogechi back to her parents.
She looked shocked, not because she wasn’t praying for Ogechi to leave from her son’s life, but was shocked that Ndubuisi sent her packing on his own, without even having another thought or even asking her, the mother. And she fell into a silent jubilation and pretended to be concerned for Ogechi.
“My son, but Ogechi is a nice girl. You are not telling me what happened and why you sent her back to her father’s house or has she been caught? Has those market women’s claims been confirmed? Tell me my son”
But Ndubuisi doesn’t want to start telling her what happened, he doesn’t have strength for long talks. He only came to inform her that, Ogechi was no longer with him and also declare his intention of marrying another woman.
“Mama, I didn’t come here to start narrating what she did. I’m going back to the city. And this time, I will be marrying the woman I wanted to marry before and you are not changing my mind again. I regretted ever listening to you and ended up with that low life.” He said, walking fast to enter his car.
And that was not what Okwuchi was planning. She doesn’t want her son to marry a city girl.
“A city girl will be far exposed and wild and won’t give me the chance to still control my son’s life. Ogechi will even be better than any city girl. Ndubuisi shouldn’t make me regret throwing Ogechi out of his life. I must talk him out of it because I already have another girl for him who is more responsible and humble” Okwuchi said in her heart, not liking the idea of her son marrying a girl from the city.
