As Okwuchi rushed to stop Ndubuisi who was already inside his car about to drive out. She hit the car by the trunk side, making Ndubuisi to stop.
“What is it, Mama?” he asked, winding down
“My son listen, I understand that I made a terrible mistake with Ogechi. You know it wasn’t my fault. She and her entire family deceived us, they lied to us. How would I have known that, she was bad?”
“Yes mama, it wasn’t your fault. It was entirely mine for listening to you and that is why, this time I’m making the decision myself by choosing a girl that I know very well”
“But why must it be a city girl? Those girls that doesn’t have any respect for anyone. Those girls that are too wild and indecent. My son, don’t make this mistake, there are so many responsible girls from well respected homes in this village you can marry from”
Ndubuisi continued looking at her to see where she will land.
And Okwuchi continued, “I even found one for you. She is very responsible and more beautiful than Ogechi”
And Ndubuisi shook his head, wound up and left without replying his mother.
Okwuchi stood baffled watching his car out of the compound.
“Ndubuisi shouldn’t make me regret chasing Ogechi out of his life. Having a city girl in his life will even be worse than with Ogechi. I didn’t see this coming.”
She then rushed to her friend’s house, Nkechi and shared the latest news to her.
She first started by telling her about Ndubuisi returning Ogechi to her father’s house and Nkechi shouted in joy that their plans finally worked.
“But how did it happen? Did he catch her red handed?”
“I don’t know, he refused to share with me” Okwuchi replied, but showing a very low spirit.
“But are you not supposed to be happy about it, I mean, she is finally out of his life?” Nkechi asked, noticing Okwuchi’s moody look
“My friend, I was busy planning to throw Ogechi out of my son’s life forgetting that, such decision may make him to return to his initial plan of marrying a city girl”
“And that one may even be worse than Ogechi”
“Exactly my fear” Okwuchi said
“Then, you have to stop him like you did before.”
“My dear friend, I don’t think that is ever going to be possible again. I saw it in his eyes, he swore never to have me determine his choice of wife again. And the way he looked at me shows that, he is extremely angry with me. Nkechi, in my efforts of trying to secure my place, permanently in my son’s heart, I kept on pushing him farther away from me. I really don’t want to regret ever pushing Ogechi out of his life” Okwuchi said, as regrets started showing on her face.
While Ndubuisi was still on his way back to the city, he started remembering his days with Ogechi and how he had come to love and adore her. While still on it, he sighted one of the women who accused Ogechi of stealing their fish.
He began feeling bad on how Ogechi turned him into a fool. That, she couldn’t even open up to him that those women were right. He then, reminisced how she was just standing there, allowing the women to continue beating her, without putting any resistance.
“I should have known she wasn’t innocent. That explains why she was just standing there, allowing those women pour their anger on her”
While he was still reminiscing everything, his mind centred on her eyes, when she looked at him.
“Her eyes appeared like someone in pains and in need of help. She made them look so innocent. Seriously, that girl is a complete actress. She knows how to manipulate situations to her advantage. And thank God I won’t be doing anything with her ever again” He then continued his journey.
Ogechi wasn’t eating anything. She was just in her room and scared of coming out to avoid stealing anything again. She never stopped crying over everything. She never stopped missing Ndubuisi.
She also asked her parents not to go to Ndubuisi’s house to discuss about what happened and how to take her back. That going there, will make them to be insulted and disgraced. She doesn’t want such fate for her parents……
