Mama Why – season 2 episode 8 by Ngozi Lovelyn
“You heard, then what are you doing here?” Ndubuisi repeated his question, showing no affection for Ogechi
“I have been trying to connect with you, but you are not giving me any listening ear. You are still my husband. I haven’t forgotten you. And about the stealing, since you left me, I’ve never touched anything that doesn’t belong to me. The spirit left after it’s mission was accomplished”
“Ogechi, it’s over between us, I’m set to marry another woman and our wedding is already fixed. And you coming here is absolutely pointless. And where are you going to stay? Because I know, you don’t have anyone here in the city and don’t even think of entering my house, because my fiancee is around”
Ogechi fixed her eyes on him as tears flowed freely.
‘You mean you don’t have any feeling for me at all, not even a little?” she asked so emotionally
“Yes and I mean it, you are not my class. I can’t marry you, please” Ndubuisi replied, as his face lacked emotions
And Ogechi turned and started leaving.
“And to where are you going?” he asked
But Ogechi ignored him, walking away, feeling enormously dejected.
Looking at Ndubuisi’s eyes, she couldn’t find anything for her inside. He lost all the love he once had for her.
Ndubuisi then started heading upstairs, thinking that, Ogechi really had someone in the city, otherwise she wouldn’t have ignored him the time he asked her where she was heading to.
Ndubuisi entered his flat and was welcomed by Cherry who was excited to have him home.
They exchanged a welcome kiss as she had him sat and they started chatting about how their day went.
Ogechi doesn’t have anyone in the city and sleeping at Ndubuisi’s house for the night would surely break her heart the more. The house that was formerly hers was about belonging to another woman. She preferred sleeping in the harsh cold of the nights and the wicked bites of mosquitoes than sleeping in his house, but she doesn’t know that, harsh cold and mosquitoes are not the only agents of the night.
While Ndubuisi and Cherry were still discussing, his mind clicked to Ogechi again and another kind of feeling engulfed him. He then excused himself to take his bath.
“Alright Love, let me set the dining then” Cherry said, warmly
“Alright” Ndubuisi said, heading to the room.
While he was still in the bathroom, he remembered Ogechi again and started feeling troubled.
“And why am I feeling this way? She didn’t answer me when I asked her where she was going, which means, she must have someone here in the city” he then continued bathing, shaking his head off from the unwanted thoughts.
Ogechi’s mother was eagerly waiting for Ogechi to call her, to tell her how things were at Ndubuisi’s house, but no call. She tried reaching her, but the line wasn’t reachable and she got worried.
When Ndubuisi came out of the bathroom, he changed into his home wear and headed to the dining to have his dinner.
But he found his heart heavy and not feeling like eating anything.
His mind flashed to Ogechi when she was leaving.
He started regretting allowing her left. He should have allowed her stay for the night to leave the next morning.
“I think she sure has someone in the city, but why all these negative feelings? I really don’t like this. I clearly asked her where she was going. She heard me but didn’t respond, which means, she has a place where she can stay” he then encouraged his heart to remain still
But as he tried resuming his food, the same heaviness came again. He then forced him self up from the chair and Cherry startled, looking at him, confused on what was happening.
“I don’t think I have appetite anymore” he said, entering the room.
“But why? What happened? Is the food not tasty enough?” she asked, but Ndubuisi was heading inside
He picked his phone, tried searching for Ogechi’s line. The one he had was the old one. He didn’t save the new one.
Cherry was still in the dinning trying to check what happened with the food.
Ndubuisi was still trying for a way to get to Ogechi, he then remembered her sending him messages. So he rushed his inbox and finally saw the number.
He dialed it, but wasn’t reachable.
While he was still having the phone on his hand, a call chimed his phone.
He tapped it and discovered it was Ogechi’s mother.
She asked him if her daughter was with him.
“So you were the one who sent her here when I strongly made it clear that, I don’t have anything to do anything with her ever again”
“That means she reached safely. I only called to find out whether she reached because, she doesn’t know her way too well in the city” Ogechi’s mother said, ignoring what Ndubuisi was saying.
“She reached, but she is not here, she left”
“She left to where? Ogechi is not here, she is not with you, then where is she? Listen, nothing should happen to my daughter, because she doesn’t have anyone in that city.”
And Ndubuisi finally understood why his heart was troubled.
He then dusconnected the call, while Ogechi’s mother was still on the line.
He dashed out of the room and informed Cherry who was about meeting him in the room, that he would be back, that he had an emergency to attend to.
Cherry was still about asking him where he was rushing to and what was happening, Ndubuisi already left the house.
