Ujuaku was jittering about, biting her fingers, trying to scratch her head on what next to do.
Okwuchi who was still screaming that her son was dead rushed Ujuaku, grabbing enough fabric of her blouse, shaking her aggressively.
“Ujuaku, tell me what crime I’ve committed by asking you to be my son’s wife?”
Ujuaku who was out of option quickly remembered how everything happened, on whether she made a mistake on how she touched Ndubuisi with the portion her mother gave her.
She flashed back to how she rubbed it on her palm, waiting for Ndubuisi to enter the room.
The moment Ndubuisi entered, as he was about dragging her out of the room, she swift her hand, reaching his face and rubbed the substance on his face. She was very fast.
Before Ndubuisi could slap her hand off his face, Ujuaku already achieved her purpose.
“I didn’t make any mistake. I did everything just like my mother instructed, then what is happening to him?” she fixed a look on Ndubuisi who was still lying on Ogechi’s arms, looking lifeless.
And the next thing she did, she pushed Okwuchi and headed straight for the door. She ran away.
Okwuchi gnashed deeply in pain, rubbing her waist that was hit on the floor.
“Ujuaku, come back here and undo whatever you did on my son. Come back here, Ujuaku!” Okwuchi called, straining her voice due to her aching waist, but Ujuaku already gone
Ogechi still had Ndubuisi on her arms, calling him to wake up.
“Ndum, please don’t leave me, you know I can’t leave without you. Come back to me, my husband, please come back” she sobbed deeply
“Mama, let’s take him to the hospital, we are loosing him” Ogechi suggested, as fear kept brushing her heart
“That’s not something an English hospital can take care off. He needs traditional herbs” Okwuchi replied
“Ok…tell me what to do?” Ogechi asked, carefully laying Ndubuisi on the floor, eager to get everything they needed to save him.
“I need to ask someone first” Okwuchi said
As she was about getting her phone to call the evil native doctor, Ndubuisi started shaking aggressively again and frightened looking Ogechi burst into tears, calling his name. She bent, holding him, trying to calm him down as her tears continued dropping on Ndubuisi’s skin.
She shouted with a high tone, asking Okwuchi to do something, do whatever she had to do fast.
Okwuchi had her hand shaking terribly, dialing the native doctor’s cell phone number.
The man still wasn’t responding as Okwuchi fell into a panic attack. She kept on trying to reach him.
Ndubuisi was able to remain calm after Ogechi held him again, but he still remained unconscious. She lifted his head and placed it on her laps.
She fixed a look with Okwuchi who was busy trying to reach the native doctor.
“I want you to have faith Ogechi. Have faith for both of us, for the sake of Ndubuisi. I have committed a terrible mistake, which I don’t know if my prayers can still work on him. Be his strength and ask God to save him. My prayers will mean nothing to him because I’m a terrible sinner” Okwuchi begged soberly, weeping, still having the phone on her hand.
She wondered why Baba wasn’t answering her calls.
And she tried one more time and the call went through.
In a hasty tone, Okwuchi narrated what was happening with her son
The man smiled and said, Ndubuisi will be fine. That he was battling inside, fighting what they did on him.
That a heart that has true love hardly gets infected with love portion.
That since true love was already embedded in him, it would be hard for a foreign love to occupy the space.
That the one he truly loves should stay very close to him, that the effect will wear off in no time.
And Okwuchi appreciated him as they ended the call.
“You are his antidote and shouldn’t stay away from him, not even a minute. Help me, let’s carry him to the bed, he will be fine in no time” Okwuchi, who believed everything the native doctor said, informed Ogechi who had tears in her eyes, listening to what she was saying.
And they lifted Ndubuisi and carried him to the room. While he was laid on the bed, Ndubuisi who was still unconscious was found to be holding enough fabric of Ogechi’s skirt.
Ogechi called him, thinking he had regained consciousness, but Ndubuisi wasn’t responding. She tapped him, calling him, but no response.
And Okwuchi reminded her of what the native doctor said, that she shouldn’t stay away from him.
“Be by his side, always, he needs you to recover”
And Ogechi said Ok, sat beside him, lifting his head and placing it on her laps, rubbing his head, face, arms and other parts of his body, praying to God to save her husband.
Okwuchi saw the connection between her son and his wife and regretted ever fighting to separate them.
