Ngozi Lovelyn Stories Life Chronicles
My secret about to kill me – the child my husband thinks is his son, my boyfriend wants him back – part 6
He will soon be a father. Any man would be mad in joy, throwing celebrations in the air. He was to be extremely mad in joy and happiness, but none was evident in him.
He was calm and wasn’t showing any sign of excitement.
When he got tired of listening to Grace’s constant bragging, he cut her in by asking for his food.
“If you haven’t noticed, I had a long day. I am tired, is there no food in this house?”
And Grace looked a bit baffled. She was surprised to see him in that mood. And she quickly gave me a look, remembering what she did.
She prevented me from making dinner, but yet failed to prepare one. She was over excited and forgot that, my husband doesn’t stand hunger.
“I was making dinner earlier, but she came and pulled down my pot of rice from fire. It’s almost done, let me see if it can still be manageable by putting it back on fire” I said, rushing inside the kitchen
I didn’t hear any voice from the parlour, so I couldn’t tell if he scolded her or not. My husband doesn’t talk much when he is weak, sad or hungry.
Grace was extremely mad for the way I lashed on her. She met me in the kitchen, asking my reasons for reporting what she did to my husband.
“I know your intentions, to make him see me as a terrible person, who doesn’t care about her husband’s stomach. You should know this, your place is no longer in this house. I can’t wait for Mama to be here, so she can finally kick you back to your father’s house. Enjoy only for this night, serve him food, because you won’t be getting the chance to do it again. Foolish witch”
But I still ignored her. It was pointless exchanging words with her. After all, she was a true woman, while I still considered myself, unfortunate.
After I served him the food, he requested I sat beside him and join him.
I was surprised.
I asked him to repeat what he said, just to make sure that I heard right, before heeding to his request.
“Are you not my wife? Sit and join me. I have missed how we used to eat together. I have missed you so much, Amaka” he said with all sincerity.
I got chills embracing my skin. I thought my husband had forgotten about me. I thought I would become nothing to him and distance himself completely from me with the baby on the way, but there he was, showing not so much excitement about it. He was still acting like his normal self. Nothing different in his behaviour.
Grace couldn’t believe what was happening.
I also was finding it difficult to understand what was going on in his mind. After Grace was brought to him, he started avoiding me.
So, with Grace confirmed been pregnant, I expected my days in his life to be over, but that wasn’t my fate, There I was, beside him, studying his facial reactions while he enjoyed my food.
So Grace who couldn’t stand the gentle romance between my husband and I, fumed visibly and sat beside him and said,
“Are you not sitting with a fellow man? I’m the pregnant one here and the one you should ask to sit with you, and not that man”
She called me a man. Though, she was right. She was pregnant and had all the right over him. That position was meant for her and not me.
So I thought it wise to leave the space for her.
As I was about standing up, he asked me to remain seated, that he wasn’t done eating.
