Desires – Episode 2 by Ngozi Lovelyn
Ngozi Lovelyn Series
Adamma was sitting comfortably on the chair, as Obinna whom she refused to offer a seat, stood by the side, but still wearing a humble happy face, waiting to be offered a seat.
“Where do you say your shop is again?” Adamma asked
“I’m planning to open one today” he replied, still looking happy
And Adamma burst into a mocking laughter, but hiding her face, so as not to be noticed she was laughing.
Just then, Ifeoma joined them, and interrupting with greeting Obinna.
On sighting Ifeoma, Adamma’s face tightened in hatred.
And Obinna turned, facing the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
Feeling satisfied and happy, he returned the greeting.
“Good morning, Ify, how are you?” he asked
“I am fine and you?” Ifeoma asked
“I am fine” Obinna replied
“I was told you were looking for me?”
“Yes, this young man has come to ask for your hand in marriage” Adamma cut in, looking very mean and charged
But Ifeoma scoffed, ran him a thorough look from head to toe.
“Then you must be wasting your time, I won’t marry you”
“Hey!” Angry looking Adamma cut in, as Ifeoma startled, facing her.
“Ifeoma, this young man has come to marry you and as the head of this house, you don’t have any reason to say no”
“No ma, it doesn’t have to be this way. I’m just meeting her, she will eventually change her mind” Obinna interrupted her
“Young man, you said you want to marry Ifeoma?” Adamma asked
“Yes, but I will cha…..”
“Then be fast about it before I change my mind” Adamma gave a long hiss and saw herself out of their presence, still looking very mean and serious
Ifeoma was Adamma’s niece.
Ikuka, who was Ifeoma’s father married the love of his life, Oriaku.
Oriaku died 2 years after giving birth to her only daughter, Ifeoma after battling a long severe illness.
Seeing that his daughter was still very young and tender, Ikuka decided to marry his sister inlaw, Adamma, who was Oriaku’s younger sister, with the hope she will love Ifeoma, her niece with the equal amount of love, Oriaku would have given her daughter, if she was still alive.
Little did he know that Adamma had a very deep furious and active hatred for her late sister, Oriaku. And the hatred continued breeding and which she transferred on the poor innocent Ifeoma.
With the death of her father, Ifeoma never saw peace. No day passes by
without facing the constant hatred of her Aunt, who was also her step mother and her young daughter, Uzoma who was Ifeoma’s younger step sister.
Seeing there was no escape for her, she decided to embrace life as she saw it and hoping on when fate will finally smile upon her.
While still standing there, looking for a way to engage Ifeoma into a conversation, Obinna was lost of how how to initiate a chat, because Ifeoma was looking very unhappy and upset.
But he had to start somehow.
“A cousin of mine has so much faith that I will definitely find what I am searching for in this compound. He only told me you are a very good and kind girl, but he didn’t mention how beautiful you are. And I believe your beauty is an added benefit for me. I am feeling extremely happy and on top of the world. Ify, allow me into your world and………”
“What is your name again?” Ifeoma interrupted
“Obinna, my name is Obinna”
“Obinna, you are wasting your time here, because what you are searching for in this compound, you will never find it.”
“But Ify, hear me out, I have found favour in your sight”
But Ifeoma wasn’t interested. She walked out on him as Obinna continued calling her back.
Adamma just entered the room and saw Uzoma sucking.
She wondered what could be wrong with her daughter.
“Is it not Ifeoma? If you do not punish her for insulting me this morning, I swear I won’t eat anything today” Uzoma threatened
“What did she do?” Adamma asked
Obinna was looking weak, sad and trying to locate his way out of the compound. He looked back, hoping to see Ifeoma running back to him, that she has changed her mind, but his wish wasn’t been granted. He continued walking unhappy, making his way out of the compound.
Adamma was still trying to calm her daughter down.
“Just endure her for few more days, I must make sure she marry that wretched looking young man and carry her evil bad luck out of this house.”
“But mama, must you allow her marry that man, can’t you see he is handsome?”
“Handsome? The beauty of a man is in his pocket, not the way he looks. Ifeoma marrying that man means her suffering continues. So don’t worry and relax, she is finally leaving this house. I can’t even wait to see them married. Two wretched souls, what good is there union going to create? Absolutely nothing. More hardship and wretched life” Adamma laughed scornfully, as Uzoma tried thinking deep into what she said.
