Chidimma my baby – episode 4 by Ngozi Lovelyn
I wanted to forget what my friend said by putting it behind me, but the more I tried, the stronger the urge to ask her became.
So I decided to do the needful so as to know my true stand with her.
So I texted her on WhatsApp, because I wasn’t confident enough to ask her over the call. I was scared of hearing her say, “yes, that she was married”.
My message read, “baby, I had a scary dream, where you were married to another man. That dream looked so real. Please tell me the truth and nothing but the the truth, are you married?”
I waited for hours before she could see that message.
Chidimma made her sleeping hours to start from 11pm and according to her, she doesn’t wake until its 6:30 in the morning.
It was 11 0’clock pm in West African time and the time in Texas was 5am. I couldn’t have enough sleep. I was so worried, thinking about the whole thing. She said she sleeps by 11, but I sent the text around 11:01. And I saw her online before typing that text, which means, she wasn’t deep in sleep enough to attend to her lover.
Chidimma wasn’t attending to her phone, so I decided to call, to wake her up. The phone rang, but she didn’t.
She didn’t get to her phone, till it was 7 in the morning, that is Lagos time. And this started growing my suspicions.
When she finally saw the message, she called immediately and was sounding highly upset.
I was so careful in between the lines of the message to make it appear like, I had a dream, so why was she upset? I expected her to laugh over it and not get angry, but instead of assuring me that the dream I had was only just a dream, she was acting like, I actually heard it from someone.
“Listen, I am sure this is not a dream. You have started listening to gossips or are you just looking for an excuse to break up with me? Tell me the truth now, are you tired of this relationship?”
And there, I got a bit confused. I don’t know if she was trying to be smart and shift the whole thing to me, or was she actually saying the truth.
I got quiet, trying to understand the whole situation.
When she saw that, I wasn’t explaining myself, she then decided to calm me down.
“Babe, I don’t know where you are picking this idea from, but let me assure me, I am not married and I am still a virgin, waiting for her man to return to her. But seriously, I can’t believe you are doubting me, after all this years. You are insulting my innocence now, seriously and I’m not happy with you. You have spoiled my day”
I was studying her tone. She was trying to calm me down and at same time, extremely angry.
So I decided to say OK and believe her.
As we were ending the call, she professed her love and said she will call me later in the day.
And our call ended.
I tried hard to believe her, but thinking about the way she ignored my calls the previous night gave me quite a scare, because I know, even if I’m in deep sleep and her call comes in, I will be more than glad to hear her voice. So thinking about the whole thing, I decided to run a deeper check to confirm if she was really married or not.
The first place I landed was her Facebook profile. We are friends on Facebook, she never updated her status to being married, it was still on “in a relationship”. But that wasn’t what I was looking for. I started going through comments on some of her recent posts. I believed I may find a clue.
